Many different things come to mind when we think of the word raw. The first thing that comes to my mind is, “in the raw,” or naked.
Then my mind also wonders to fresh, untreated, uncooked, unprocessed and natural to name a few. The word raw can take on many meanings to different people, but when we talk about raw food, I think about freedom.
Why Not Just Throw It All In The Pot?
What is raw food all about? Raw food nutrition is based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods. Heating food is believed to destroy enzymes that can assist in the digestion and absorption of the foods you eat. Enzymes occur naturally in all living things and they play an important role in every system in our bodies: digestive, nervous, respiratory, muscular, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune and more.
When we eat cooked food, our stored enzymes have to go to battle trying to breakdown the food we have taken in, take what minimal good stuff is left in it, and ship out the rest. This takes away from the important work they need to be doing all over our body and ultimately, this leads to accelerated aging. Eating uncooked and unprocessed foods gives our body more of the enzyme it needs so our operating system can function smoothly.
How Does Raw Food Set You Free?
The beauty of raw food is in the freedom it gives to you.
- Raw food gives you the freedom to stay away from the stove and microwave. Once you’ve done the slicing, dicing, chopping and stirring your ready to eat.
- Raw food gives you the freedom to experience your food on a whole new level. The colors of your food are brighter, the flavors are bolder the texture is varied – just as it is in nature.
- Eating raw gives you the freedom to grow your own food, free from preservatives and pesticides. We can have control of the foods we grow but when you eat a diet that consists mostly of meat it is much more difficult because most of us do not have the means to raise our own cattle to ensure quality and humane treatment of what you are about to put into your body.
- Eating raw gives you the freedom to take control over your health. Once, food was our medicine. Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine by thy food”. I believe he was on the right track. Advances in modern medicine are amazing and valuable on many levels, but with when educated about raw food, Superfood and Superherb nutrition, we can do so much to upgrade our wellness beyond what conventional pills and elixirs can do and we have the freedom to make it a reality at any time.
Now that we know a bit of why raw food is beneficial, does it mean you should never have another piece of cooked food again? Not necessarily. A little raw food can go a long way; I encourage my clients to find a good balance in their nutrition plan. Everyone incorporates the amount of raw food that suits his or her lifestyle and preferences.
Begin by having one meal each day that is totally raw. If you are already there, strive to reach a minimum of 50% raw food intake for the entire day. Start experimenting with more raw foods and see for yourself the freedom it can bring to you everyday.
